Petra in Jordan. This place is just incredible and I think it should be on everyone’s bucket list. If you’ve ever seen that Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade movie then you’ve seen at least the Treasury Building here. This is the first big temple you see after walking down the long narrow canyon (Siq) from Wadi Musa into the Petra World Heritage site. I spent 3 full days walking around this huge place and still feel I only scratched the surface. The history represented here is just incredible. Like many (most) World Heritage sites, Petra can be a little bit of a scene in terms of aggressive local commerce, touts and tourists, but I was there in the deep freeze of winter (it snowed in the hills) so it never felt too crowded. I had some really wonderful experiences all over the place with the Jordanian people everywhere. I loved spending some time with the Bedouins in Wadi Rum and one day would love to go back and rock climb there.
